SEC EDGAR (primary source)

Company financial data comes from the US Securities and Exchange Commission's EDGAR system, via its public structured-data (XBRL) APIs. These are the figures companies themselves file in 10-K and 10-Q reports. SEC filing data is public information; we access it following the SEC's published fair-access guidance (identified requests, modest request rates, caching).

Each article's Data & Methodology section identifies the filings behind its figures, and company pages state the forms and retrieval dates used.

From the same public SEC system we also use:

  • Form 4 filings for insider trades. Transaction prices shown are the prices insiders reported in their filings.
  • Annual reports (10-K) for revenue by business segment, product and region, as tagged in the filing.
  • Filing histories for recent filings and the dates companies announced results (8-K, Item 2.02).
  • Form 13F quarterly data sets for institutional holders. These cover the long US-listed positions of investment managers above $100M, as each manager reported them, filed up to 45 days after quarter end.
  • Annual-report risk factors and earnings press releases as the sources for our editorial risk and outlook summaries, which are written in our own words and link to the underlying filing.

Peer comparisons rank each company against the other companies we cover in the same industry, using the same SEC-derived figures.

Market quotes and charts

Share prices, index levels, option quotes and the charts built from them use third-party market data and may be delayed. Our value per share and the fundamentals grade are computed from SEC filings alone; market data enters only where a figure compares value with the market.

Market prices

Share prices, option quotes and the market values, multiples and performance figures built from them come from third-party market data providers and may be delayed. Company financials, our valuations and the fundamentals grade are computed from SEC filings; prices enter only where a figure compares value with the market (multiples, ratings, options ideas, performance tables).
