Options ideas

Two income strategies anchored in our fundamentals, not in price charts: get paid to wait to buy companies we rate well, or get paid for upside you'd be happy to sell.

Cash-secured put

Get paid to wait to buy

You agree to buy 100 shares at a set price (the strike) if the stock falls below it by expiry, and set the cash aside. For taking on that obligation you're paid a premium upfront — yours to keep either way. We only suggest these on companies with strong fundamentals, at strikes where the effective purchase price is below our value.

Covered call

Get paid for upside you'd sell anyway

You own 100 shares and agree to sell them at a set price if the stock rises above it by expiry. You're paid a premium upfront. We set strikes at or above our value, so if your shares are called away you sell at a price our model calls full value.

Option prices from the US close on Thu 29 Oct (delayed, indicative). Premiums are per contract of 100 shares. Click a column to sort; tap a company for its full breakdown.

Companies with a fundamentals grade of B+ or better, rated Buy or Hold on our model, with low or medium uncertainty. Strike near a 25% chance of assignment; effective price at or below our value. Sorted by annualised yield.

How we judge whether options are rich

Each stock page with listed options compares the market's price of future movement, its implied volatility, with how much the shares have actually moved, their realised volatility. We take 30-day at-the-money implied volatility (calls and puts, interpolated to the share price and to 30 days) and set it against realised volatility over the last 20 days, 60 days and year (daily closes, annualised).

Research has long found that option prices usually imply more movement than follows: sellers earn a premium for bearing the risk of sudden falls. Across single stocks, those whose implied volatility stands furthest above their historical volatility have been the better ones to sell options on. No study gives a fixed threshold, so ours is a stated convention. We call options rich only when all three hold:

  • Beyond measurement noise: implied is at least 1.2 times 60-day realised. A 60-day reading carries roughly ±9% sampling error, so 1.2 times is about two standard errors above it.
  • Above normal: the stock ranks in the top fifth of our coverage that day on implied ÷ realised. Some premium is normal; we look for an unusual one, and ranking adjusts to calm and nervous markets.
  • Not a quiet spell: implied is also above the last year's realised volatility, so a few calm weeks do not make ordinary options look expensive.

We never call options rich when a results date falls inside their life: implied volatility is meant to be high then. When implied is below 60-day realised we say options look cheap: the case for selling is weaker. We never suggest buying options on that basis. We also show whether puts or calls are priced higher (25-delta), and, once enough time has passed, how often our “rich” calls were followed by smaller moves than implied.

Collars (own the shares, buy a put, sell a call, same expiry, strikes near 25-delta) are shown when the shares trade at or above our fair value: a floor under the price, paid for with upside the model does not expect. Studies of protective puts find that protection has usually cost returns over time, so we make no performance claim for collars.

What can go wrong

  • Put sellers can buy into a falling stock. If the share price drops far below the strike, you still pay the strike: your loss is the strike minus the premium, per share, all the way down.
  • Call sellers give up big gains. If the stock soars past the strike, your gain stops at the strike plus the premium.
  • Results and news move prices. A results date before expiry can cause a jump either way.
  • Chance of assignment is approximate. It's taken from the option's delta, a rough guide rather than a true probability.
  • Prices here are indicative and delayed. Spreads, fees and early assignment are not modelled.
