A diagnostics beat, with a smaller margin cushion

Third-quarter revenue reached $1,214 million, up 10% as reported and organic, with CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue up 11% as reported and organic. Diluted earnings per share were $4.01, 18% higher than a year earlier, helped by a $0.04 currency tailwind and a $0.03 per-share gain on an equity investment.

Management raised 2026 revenue guidance to $4,741 million-$4,767 million from $4,700 million-$4,745 million, and lifted its EPS outlook to $14.96-$15.16 from $14.69-$14.94. A bigger profit number built on a narrower margin assumption is the detail a more cautious reading of the same filing would flag: the quarter's strength came with an admission that margins will expand less than previously planned.

A move ten times the ordinary trading day

The 20.3% rise was 9.9x IDEXX's typical daily move of 2.0% over the past year, the largest in this direction since 4 August 2025. Trading volume ran 3.7x the 30-day average. The S&P 500 fell 0.1% the same session, and the median move among covered health-care-equipment peers was a rise of 0.5%, so neither the broad market nor the sector explains the size of the jump.

Underneath the quarter, cash generation has been outrunning profit for some time. Trailing twelve-month free cash flow rose 35.3% while net income rose 15.1%. Diluted share count fell 2.2% year over year. For the longer financial history behind these numbers, see IDEXX's full company analysis.

A margin gain that moves the model more than growth would

IDEXX's free-cash-flow margin has risen over the past year. In our discounted cash flow model, if that higher margin persists, it moves the model's base-case value up 20.9%. By comparison, moving the model's stage-one growth assumption up from its base case of 11.9% changes value up 32.3% for 5 percentage points of extra growth, or down 24.9% for 5 percentage points less. The model's current base-case value is $$340.00 per share. These are model values under stated assumptions, not a comparison with the share price.

The next quarterly report will test whether the raised guidance holds against the lower margin assumption management has now built in. A repeat of this quarter's recurring-revenue growth at CAG Diagnostics without a further margin give-back would support the move; a result below the new $14.96-$15.16 EPS range would undo it.
