When several House members traded Alliant Energy

Months when 2 or more House members became net buyers, or 3 or more net sellers, of Alliant Energy in reports dated in the 91 days before the month end, and how the stock did against the S&P 500 from that month end. Only House members' electronic trade reports are included; Senate reports and reports filed on paper are not. After the 1 buying crowd with six months of prices, it averaged −4.1% against the index. One company's history is too short to judge by; the test across every company is the better guide.

Colours show whether the crowd was right: green when buyers were followed by a rise above the index, or sellers by a fall below it. Total returns from the month end; past patterns are not a forecast.

Source: periodic transaction reports filed with the Clerk of the House of Representatives under the STOCK Act (Senate reports are not included yet). Members report trades by themselves, their spouses and dependent children. Amounts are the value ranges as filed, not exact figures, and a report can be filed up to 45 days after the trade, so the latest trades may not appear yet. Scanned paper reports are linked but not transcribed. By law (5 U.S.C. §13107) these reports may not be used for any commercial purpose other than by news and communications media for dissemination to the general public; we publish them free, as news.
