What Mueller reported

Mueller Industries shares fell 7.4% on Tuesday, the stock’s biggest one-day fall since February 2026, on the day the company reported third-quarter results. The move is confirmed by Mueller’s own filing: an 8-K lodged with the SEC on 20 October carried the earnings release under Item 2.02.

The reported figures were higher on every headline measure. Net sales rose to $1.42 billion from $1.08 billion a year earlier, net income to $221.2 million from $208.1 million, and diluted earnings per share to $1.00 from $0.94, the ninth consecutive quarter in which earnings grew year on year. The company also raised its quarterly dividend to $0.175 per share from $0.125. The decline did not follow weaker headline numbers. News reports covered the results as they were released.

How big the fall was

For Mueller, a one-day move this size is unusual. A typical session shifts the stock about 2.2% in either direction, measured by the standard deviation of daily returns over the past year, so Tuesday’s drop was about 3.4 times a normal day. Trading volume ran about 1.7 times its average over the past month, so more shares than usual changed hands.

A company-specific fall

The decline was specific to the company. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% in the same session, and the median move among the other nonferrous metals companies we cover was 0%. No broad sell-off pulled Mueller down.

What it means for value

The reported growth speaks to the input our model leans on most. Our base case uses a stage-one growth rate of 14.8%, the same as trailing revenue growth, so how the market reads Mueller’s expansion moves the value more than any other input. A growth rate 5 percentage points higher raises the value 29.5%, while 5 points lower reduces it 22.9%. The discount rate is the other large input: a 1 percentage point increase lowers the value 14.7%. Free-cash-flow margin counts for less, with each 1 percentage point worth 6.6%, and the small softening in that margin over the past year, if it holds, would trim the value 1.6%. Our base-case model value is $100 per share. These are model values under stated assumptions, not a comparison with the share price.

The other reading

A session like this reflects expectations and positioning as much as the reported figures, and we license no estimates, so we do not quantify how the quarter landed against them. The release itself carried cautionary detail beneath the higher headline numbers. The price of copper on COMEX averaged $6.48 per pound in the quarter, 34.2% higher than a year before, and the company said part of the higher sales came from price increases tied to rising material costs rather than volume alone. Results also included $9.4 million of purchase-accounting charges, and the chief executive, Greg Christopher, pointed to continued weakness in US residential construction. Set against that, the cash position strengthened: operating cash flow was $337.0 million in the quarter, cash and short-term investments reached $1.48 billion, and the company bought back 3.2 million shares for $201.9 million, 4.5 million so far this year. The fuller detail will arrive with the 10-Q, which updates revenue, margins and cash flow on the same basis as the figures above.
