Profit beat, revenue dip, and a non-cash writedown

Fiserv's revenue fell 1% to $5.20 billion in the quarter, with Merchant Solutions down 3% and Financial Solutions flat, according to the release. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.75, versus $2.04 a year earlier. GAAP results showed a loss of $11.17 a share, driven almost entirely by a $6.45 billion non-cash goodwill impairment that the company attributed to a sustained decline in its share price and market value. Management reaffirmed full-year guidance of adjusted earnings per share between $7.20 and $7.40 and organic revenue of between a 1% decline and flat for 2026.

A bigger savings target and resumed buybacks

Alongside the results, Fiserv said it was raising its Project Elevate savings target to $1 billion, double the $500 million goal it had set previously, after what it described as a comprehensive portfolio review. Chief financial officer Paul Todd said growing confidence in the turnaround let the company resume share repurchases earlier than planned, with $500 million of buybacks set for the fourth quarter. The release also noted the completed sale of Fiserv's student loan servicing business and the formation of a new joint venture, MoneyPass Group, covering its ATM and cash-handling operations.

A rare swing for Fiserv shares

Shares closed at $58.40, up from $51.93 the previous session. The advance was 5.2x Fiserv's typical daily move over the past year (2.4%), on volume 3.1x its 30-day average. It was the stock's largest gain in this direction since 24 March 2020. Peers in transaction and payment processing moved the other way that day, with the median covered company in the group falling 1.2%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.3%, underscoring that the rally was specific to Fiserv rather than a sector-wide move.

The underlying growth slowdown has not reversed

Tuesday's relief should be read against a longer deceleration. Revenue over the trailing twelve months fell 1.2% year over year, and operating margin over the same period is down 7.8 percentage points. The market may be pricing a turnaround that still needs further quarters to confirm.

Growth assumptions move our model more than margin does

If growth runs 5 percentage points lower than that on a sustained basis, model value falls 37.0%; if it runs 5 points higher, model value rises 48.6%. Margin matters too: the FCF margin move of the past year, down 5.6 percentage points, would lower model value −25.0% if it persisted, and each percentage point of FCF margin lost on its own lowers model value −5.9%. A one-point rise in the discount rate used in the model lowers value −20.9%. These are model values under stated assumptions, not a comparison with the share price.

Fourth-quarter organic growth is the next test

The next quarterly report will show whether Financial Solutions' return to organic growth and Merchant's stabilisation continue, whether the $500 million of fourth-quarter buybacks are completed as outlined, and whether realised savings move toward the raised $1 billion Project Elevate target. A renewed organic revenue decline, or a result outside the affirmed $7.20-to-$7.40 adjusted earnings range, would undercut the case the market priced in on Tuesday.
