Pentair shares rose 12.0% on Tuesday after the company reported quarterly results before the session. A report said earnings and revenue beat estimates, making the reported surprise the clearest supported explanation for the rise; the release itself confirms the results, not why investors reacted.
What the results showed
Pentair reported third-quarter sales of $976 million, down 4.0% year over year. Adjusted earnings per share fell 5.0% to $1.18, while the company updated full-year GAAP EPS guidance to approximately $3.76 and reaffirmed the midpoint of its adjusted EPS guidance at approximately $4.70. The reported beat may have mattered alongside that steadier adjusted outlook, though the available reporting does not establish which disclosure drove the session move.
The release also showed uneven performance beneath the headline. Pool sales fell 18.0%, and Pool segment income fell 38.0%; Flow sales rose 4.0%, while Water Solutions sales rose 1.0%. Pentair said Pool performance reflected completion of an inventory realignment with major channel partners.
How unusual the move was
The session gain of 12.0% was 5.6x the size of Pentair’s typical daily move of 2.2% over the past year. It was also the company’s biggest move in this direction since 24 March 2020.
The broader market and industry moved much less. The S&P 500 proxy rose 0.0%, while the median move among covered industrial machinery and supplies companies was 0.4%. Pentair’s trading volume was 0.5x its 30-day average, so the price change came with lighter-than-usual turnover.
Cash flow and the value model
TTM revenue fell 2.1%, while operating margin rose 0.9 percentage points year over year. TTM free cash flow fell 19.6% even as net income grew 6.9%. That divergence makes the earnings beat less conclusive as evidence of improving cash generation.
In our model, a persistent year-on-year FCF-margin change would imply a −20.2% change in model value. A five-percentage-point lower growth assumption changes model value by −29.3%. The inputs capture different risks: cash conversion has weakened, while the model also remains sensitive to its forward growth assumption.
These are model values under stated assumptions, not a comparison with the share price.
What comes next
Pentair’s release introduced fourth-quarter sales guidance of approximately 7.0% to 9.0% growth on a reported basis, alongside adjusted EPS guidance of approximately $1.15.
