Abbott Laboratories discovers, develops, manufactures and sells healthcare products. It makes branded generic medicines such as Creon, Synthroid and the Influvac flu vaccine; diagnostic instruments and tests under names including Alinity, ARCHITECT, i-STAT and the BinaxNOW rapid tests; nutritional products including the Similac infant formulas, Ensure, PediaSure and Glucerna; and medical devices for cardiovascular care (including MitraClip and the XIENCE stent), the FreeStyle Libre glucose monitor and neuromodulation devices for chronic pain.
It earns revenue by selling these goods. Depending on the segment, customers include wholesalers, distributors, hospitals, clinics, laboratories, blood banks, pharmacies, retailers, government agencies and, for nutrition, consumers directly. Products are shipped from Abbott-owned distribution centres, public warehouses or third-party distributors.
The business is organised into four reportable segments: Established Pharmaceutical Products (sold outside the United States in emerging markets), Diagnostic Products, Nutritional Products and Medical Devices. Abbott sells worldwide and employed about 115,000 people at the end of 2025, 69% of them outside the US, operating in more than 160 countries. An Illinois corporation incorporated in 1900, it agreed in November 2025 to acquire Exact Sciences to enter cancer diagnostics.
