CME Group operates derivatives exchanges and a clearing house, offering exchange-traded futures and options alongside cleared-only interest rate swaps and event contracts. It also provides foreign exchange spot and forward contracts and fixed income products, spanning interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, agricultural commodities and metals. Trading takes place mainly on its electronic CME Globex platform, with some open outcry dealing (limited to SOFR options) and privately negotiated transactions.
Customers include regulated institutions, exchange members and individuals, with most trades billed through clearing firms. The majority of revenue comes from clearing and transaction fees charged per contract or on notional value. The group also earns subscription-based market data and information services fees from subscribers and distributors, plus access, connectivity and co-location charges, collateral management and other fees.
A cash markets business matches buyers and sellers through BrokerTec (fixed income) and EBS (foreign exchange). The group trades internationally, with premises in Chicago, New York, the UK and India, and partners with Google Cloud. It expanded through acquisitions including CBOT Holdings, NYMEX Holdings and NEX; electronic dealing accounted for 93% of volume.
