CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Florida, is a rail-based freight transportation group. Its main subsidiary, CSX Transportation, operates a roughly 20,000 route-mile rail network across 26 eastern US states, Washington D.C., and Ontario and Quebec, with access to over 70 port terminals. Other units include Quality Carriers (bulk liquid chemicals trucking), CSX Intermodal Terminals, Total Distribution Services, TRANSFLO and CSX Technology.
The company earns money by charging shippers for moving freight. Customers span manufacturers, chemical and agricultural producers, automotive makers, construction firms, energy producers, and wholesalers and retailers. Its four main lines of business are merchandise, intermodal, coal and trucking, with additional revenue from storage, demurrage and switching charges and from regional subsidiary railroads.
CSX had around 23,000 employees as of December 2025, of whom roughly 16,900 are covered by rail labor union agreements. Its history traces back to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, chartered in 1827, with the modern CSX network formed through mergers including Chessie System, Seaboard Coast Line and parts of Conrail and Pan Am.
