C Fundamentals grade

Coherent Corp. designs and manufactures photonic (light-based) technologies used in datacentre networking, telecommunications and industrial applications. Its products include optical transceivers for datacentres, ZR/ZR+ optical transceivers and other telecom transport equipment, lasers, and components for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The company is expanding indium phosphide production capacity at its site in Sherman, Texas.

Customers include hyperscale and cloud computing providers, telecommunications network operators, and semiconductor capital equipment manufacturers, who buy hardware such as transceivers, lasers and optical components. In March 2026 the company signed a multi-year agreement with NVIDIA covering manufacturing capacity and development of optical networking technology, and NVIDIA separately took an equity stake in the company through a private placement of shares.

The business is organised into two reportable segments, Datacenter & Communications and Industrial, following an internal reorganisation that took effect in July 2025. It operates with a globally diversified manufacturing base, which provides flexibility in sourcing and production. The company has divested several businesses as part of ongoing restructuring, including its aerospace and defence operations and a product division based in Munich, Germany.

Value per share by model
Model Value per share In the combined value?
Growth cash-flow model Revenue for this year and next from analysts' consensus, then growth fading to 2.5%; the operating margin moving to profitable peers'; investment needed per dollar of growth from peers; reduced by a failure probability. For young or fast-growing companies. The starting margin is normalized to between -100% and 60%; net margin is a proxy when operating income is not tagged. Uses analysts' consensus estimates (third-party data), not our forecasts. ~$69 ~$35–$98 Primary model, counts double
Forward price-to-earnings vs peers Next year's consensus earnings per share times peers' typical (harmonic-mean) forward price-to-earnings. Uses analysts' consensus estimates (third-party data), not our forecasts. ~$260 ~$220–$380 Included
Residual income Book value plus the present value of returns above the cost of equity, fading over ten years. ~$10 ~$6.1–$16 Left out: out of range vs price (0.05x)
Justified price-to-book Book value times (return on equity - growth) / (cost of equity - growth): steady-state returns. — Does not apply: return on equity is not positive
Forward price-to-sales vs peers Next year's consensus sales per share times peers' typical forward price-to-sales; only when earnings are negative. Uses analysts' consensus estimates (third-party data), not our forecasts. — Does not apply: earnings are positive: price-to-earnings is the better measure
Revenue-to-maturity model Revenue grown to maturity with the cash margin moving to the industry's; for companies not yet profitable. ~$39 ~$27–$53 Left out: out of range vs price (0.19x)
