B+ Fundamentals grade

Verisign operates core internet infrastructure and domain name registry services. It runs the authoritative directory for the .com, .net and .name generic top-level domains, along with internationalised versions, the .cc country-code domain, and the back-end systems for .edu. It also serves as Root Zone Maintainer for the DNS and runs two of the thirteen global internet root servers, and maintains a Shared Registration System through which registrars add, transfer and delete domain names.

Its direct customers are registrars, who in turn set retail prices for the individuals and organisations registering names. Revenue comes from registration fees for domains, which may be registered for one to ten years; prices for .com, .net and .name are capped under its agreements with ICANN, while .cc and internationalised domains are not. It also earns a fee for the .edu back-end service.

Incorporated in Delaware in 1995 and based in Reston, Virginia, Verisign operates under registry agreements with ICANN and, for .com, a Cooperative Agreement with the US Department of Commerce. Its data centres in Virginia and Delaware, plus more than 200 points of presence worldwide, process hundreds of billions of transactions daily.

Our note on each quarter Verisign files

10-Q filed October 22: Verisign

Revenue for the twelve months to September 2026 reached $1.73bn, up 6.5% on a year earlier and roughly matching the pace of a quarter ago. Free-cash-flow margin slipped to 59.1% from 61.8%. Over the same period the diluted share count fell 3.1%, lifting the value of each remaining share. Our model value is little changed at $246 a share, against a share price of $305, so the rating stays Hold. At that price, the model implies the market expects about 10.4% a year of cash-flow growth over five years. That is well ahead of the 5.5% a year revenue growth Verisign has actually delivered.

How we got here: a discounted-cash-flow model of Verisign Inc's free cash flow after stock-based pay with after-tax interest added back ($1B, FY2026 Q3 TTM), growing 8.2% and 7.1% in the next two years (forecasts, guidance and its record), then back to 5.9% by year five, and fading to 2.5%, discounted at 8.5%. Lower and higher growth cases span ~$190–~$330 ; that spread sets a 25% margin before we rate Buy or Sell.

Prices can fall as well as rise.

Our value per share comes from a discounted-cash-flow model of Verisign Inc's free cash flow after stock-based pay ( $1B, FY2026 Q3 TTM, with after-tax interest added back): growth for five years as below (the first two years from forecasts, guidance and the company's record), fading to 2.5%, discounted at 8.5%, then cash added and debt and other claims subtracted. These are model values under stated assumptions, not price targets or recommendations.
