Aflac is an insurance group operating in Japan and the United States. In Japan its portfolio is built around so-called third sector products — cancer, medical and other health cover — alongside first sector life insurance including traditional life, Tsumitasu, WAYS and child endowment; a recent cancer product is named Miraito. In the United States it sells accident, disability, critical care, hospital indemnity, dental and vision, and life insurance.
Its income comes mainly from premiums paid by policyholders, supplemented by income from its investment portfolio. Policies are distributed largely through sales agencies, agents and brokers, and in Japan also through banks.
The business is organised into three segments — Aflac Japan, Aflac U.S. and Corporate and Other. At the end of 2025 Aflac Japan held more than 22 million individual policies in Japan, including about 14 million cancer policies, and was represented by roughly 6,300 agencies employing some 112,000 licensed sales associates, with selling agreements at 358 banks, around 90% of all banks in the country. The US sales force averaged about 5,300 agents. Japan Post Holdings holds a stake in the parent company under a strategic alliance.
