B Fundamentals grade

American Express is a global payments company and premium lifestyle brand, founded in 1850 and headquartered in New York. Through its card-issuing, merchant-acquiring and card network businesses, it offers credit and charge cards alongside travel, dining, lifestyle and expense management services. It also provides banking and financing products such as deposits, savings and checking accounts and non-card lending, plus merchant processing, settlement, fraud prevention and point-of-sale marketing. Rewards schemes include Membership Rewards and Amex Offers, and it runs the Resy and Tock dining platforms.

Customers range from consumers and small businesses to mid-sized companies and large corporations. The company earns money chiefly from spending on its cards, and secondarily from finance charges, fees and annual card fees, as well as the discount rate charged to merchants.

It operates four reportable segments: U.S. Consumer Services, Commercial Services, International Card Services and Global Merchant and Network Services. Network partners issue cards in roughly 110 countries and territories. It had 86.6 million proprietary cards-in-force and employed approximately 76,800 people.
