C Fundamentals grade

CMS Energy is an energy holding company based in Michigan. Its main subsidiary, Consumers, is an electric and gas utility that generates, buys, transmits, stores and distributes electricity and natural gas. A second subsidiary, NorthStar Clean Energy, develops and operates independent power projects, including renewable generation, and markets power produced domestically.

Consumers' customers are mainly residential, commercial and industrial users in Michigan, who pay regulated rates for electricity and gas delivered to their homes and businesses. NorthStar Clean Energy earns money through its power generation and marketing activities and equity investments in generation projects.

The group is organised into three reporting segments: electric utility, gas utility, and NorthStar Clean Energy's non-utility operations. Consumers itself reports two segments, electric and gas utility. Operations are concentrated in Michigan, where Consumers is regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission. The company has retired coal-fuelled generating units and purchased the Covert Generating Station, a 1,200 MW facility, as part of its shift away from coal-fired power.

Based on CMS Energy's 10-K filed February 10, 2026.
