B Fundamentals grade

Synopsys supplies the software and hardware engineers use to design and test integrated circuits, the chips in electronic devices. Its electronic design automation (EDA) tools — among them Fusion Compiler, PrimeTime, VCS, Verdi and ZeBu emulation systems — automate the design and verification of complex chips, increasingly aided by its Synopsys.ai suite. After acquiring Ansys, it also sells simulation and analysis software such as Ansys Fluent and Ansys Mechanical, which predict how physical products behave. A third line is pre-designed semiconductor intellectual property (IP) — logic libraries, memory and interface blocks, security IP and ARC processors — that customers build into their chips.

EDA and IP customers are mainly semiconductor and electronics companies, while the simulation software serves industries from aerospace and defence to automotive, energy, healthcare and construction, and academia. It earns money by licensing software and IP, selling hardware systems, and providing support, training and consulting; it also offers a cloud option with Microsoft Azure.

It operates through two segments, Design Automation and Design IP, selling via direct teams and independent channel partners. Based in Sunnyvale, California, Synopsys runs 189 offices worldwide, with sites across Europe, Israel, Asia and the Americas.
