IonQ develops quantum computers and related hardware for quantum networking, sensing and security, together with maintenance and support. Its systems use a trapped-ion design, in which individual charged atoms held in a vacuum act as qubits. It also sells access to quantum computers of varying capacity and, through a satellite network, offers data services such as synthetic-aperture radar imaging.
Its customers include corporations, governments and other large organisations, among them government agencies. The company earns revenue by selling full or partial quantum systems, deployed on customers' premises or reached over the cloud, and through quantum-computing-as-a-service, or QCaaS. Cloud access runs via marketplaces from Amazon (Braket), Microsoft (Azure Quantum) and Google, alongside IonQ's own platform, and is paired with professional and consulting services.
IonQ describes itself as the first and only quantum platform company, operating across computing, networking, sensing and security. During 2025 it acquired several businesses, including Oxford Ionics, Lightsynq Technologies, id Quantique, Vector Atomic and Capella Space, then Skyloom Global in January 2026, and has announced a pending acquisition of SkyWater Technologies. It remains in the early stages of commercial growth.
