Synaptics is a US-based semiconductor company that designs chips and software for edge artificial intelligence, wireless connectivity and human-interface features in connected devices. Its products include the Astra family of edge AI processors, spanning microprocessors and microcontrollers, alongside wireless modules covering Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread and GPS, touch controllers, Natural ID fingerprint sensors, and DisplayLink and DisplayPort video interfaces.
The company sells these components to original equipment manufacturers, among them large mobile and PC makers, carmakers and consumer-electronics firms, usually through their contract manufacturers, design houses or distributors, which place the orders and pay directly. It is fabless, outsourcing wafer production and packaging to third parties, mostly in Asia, and incurs most manufacturing costs only once products ship.
Synaptics organises its offerings around three markets: core IoT, enterprise and automotive, and mobile. It was incorporated in California in 1986 and re-incorporated in Delaware in 2002, and as of June 2026 employed roughly 1,700 people across 15 countries. In June 2026 it agreed to be acquired by ON Semiconductor, a deal expected to close in mid-2027.
